スッポン属は、スッポン科に分類される属である[2]。遺伝子・形状的に7種が知られる[3]。スッポン属は南アジアに分布し、アムール川から中国・朝鮮半島、ベトナム南部で見られる[4]。日本のものは人的移入とする説があったが[3]、否定されている[5]。
中国におけるスッポン属の遺伝子型は多様性に溢れ、その一部は別種に相当する可能性がある。しかし、スッポン属は数千年前から行われが養殖、特に20世紀後半以降に行われた大規模な養殖の影響で、野生個体と養殖個体が交雑し、これらの系統の存続が危ぶまれる自体になっている[6]。

記載者・年にカッコがついている種は、当初は別の属と考えられていた。
名称[編集]
標準和名は「スッポン属」であるが[1]、「キョクトウスッポン属」という和名もある。
