ミナミマンダイとは、南極海に分布するアカマンボウの一種である[1]。
本種は、ニュージランド近海に普通に見ることが出来る。現地では延縄漁で、漁獲される。
主にミナミニュウドウイカを食べ、胃の内容調査では69尾中、93％で見られた。14％はプラスチックごみが検出され、大西洋南部ではプラスチック汚染進んでいるとされる[2]。
